Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Distinguish the primary and secondary effects of an eruption.

    Model answer

Primary effects are the immediate damage done by the eruption itself, such as burial under lava or ash. Secondary effects follow later, and include famine, disease and economic loss.

  2. 2

Give two environmental impacts of a volcanic eruption.

    Model answer

Vegetation is destroyed by lava, ash and pyroclastic flows across the affected area. Rivers are dammed or choked with sediment, which changes drainage for years.

  3. 3

Give two demographic impacts of a volcanic eruption.

    Model answer

Deaths and injuries reduce the local population immediately. Evacuation and permanent migration can empty a district, as on Montserrat after 1995.

  4. 4

Give two economic impacts of a volcanic eruption.

    Model answer

Farmland, homes and infrastructure are destroyed, and the cost of rebuilding is high. Tourism and air travel may be interrupted, cutting income far beyond the volcano itself.

  5. 5

Give two social impacts of a volcanic eruption.

    Model answer

Families are displaced into temporary shelter and lose access to schools and health care. Bereavement and long-term stress affect communities for years afterwards.

  6. 6

Describe a local-scale impact of volcanic activity.

    Model answer

Local impacts are confined to the volcano and its immediate surroundings. Burial of the town of Plymouth on Montserrat under ash and mud is one example.
