Cache memory and locality of reference
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Cache memory, cache hit and cache miss.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is cache memory?
What is a cache hit?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is cache memory?
Model answer
Cache memory is a small block of very fast memory holding recently used instructions and data. The processor checks cache before going out to main memory.
- 2
What is a cache hit?
Model answer
A cache hit occurs when the data the processor wants is already held in cache. The data is supplied without any main memory access.
- 3
What is a cache miss, and what happens next?
Model answer
A cache miss occurs when the required data is not in cache. The block containing that data is fetched from main memory and copied into cache.
- 4
Distinguish between L1, L2 and L3 cache.
Model answer
L1 cache is the smallest and fastest and sits on the core itself. L2 is larger and slower, and L3 is larger still and often shared between cores.
- 5
Explain locality of reference.
Model answer
Locality of reference means programs tend to reuse the same instructions and nearby data. Loops and arrays make the next access easy to predict.
- 6
Distinguish between temporal locality and spatial locality.
Model answer
Temporal locality means a location used once is likely to be used again soon. Spatial locality means addresses near a used address are likely to be used next.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Computer Architecture, the Processor and Assembly Language, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
