Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a mark-up language?

    Model answer

A mark-up language annotates text with tags that describe its structure or meaning. The tags are not instructions and nothing is executed.

  2. 2

Explain why a mark-up language is not a programming language.

    Model answer

A mark-up language has no variables, selection or iteration and computes nothing. The document only describes content for another program to interpret.

  3. 3

    State the purpose of HTML.

    Model answer

HTML marks up the structure of a web page as headings, paragraphs, lists, links and images. A browser reads the tags and renders the page accordingly.

  4. 4

What is an element in a mark-up document?

    Model answer

An element is an opening tag, its content and its closing tag taken together. Elements can be nested inside one another to build a hierarchy.

  5. 5

    What is an attribute?

    Model answer

An attribute is a named value written inside an opening tag to configure the element. The source of an image is supplied by an attribute.

  6. 6

    State the purpose of XML.

    Model answer

XML marks up data so that its meaning travels with it between different systems. Tag names are chosen by the author to describe the data they contain.
