Buffers and double buffering
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
How a buffer is used when reading from a disc, double buffering and buffer underrun.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a buffer needed between a processor and a printer?
Where is a printer buffer usually located?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a buffer?
Model answer
A buffer is an area of memory that holds data temporarily as it moves between two devices. The buffer compensates for the difference in their speeds.
- 2
Why is a buffer needed between a processor and a printer?
Model answer
The processor produces data far faster than the printer can put it onto paper. The buffer holds the waiting data so the processor need not stop.
- 3
Where is a printer buffer usually located?
Model answer
A printer buffer is normally held in the memory of the printer itself. Part of main memory may also be reserved as a print queue.
- 4
Explain how a buffer is used when reading from a disc.
Model answer
A whole block is read from the disc into a buffer in one operation. The program then takes the data from the buffer one record at a time.
- 5
What happens when a buffer becomes full?
Model answer
The sending device is told to stop until space has been freed. Data would otherwise be overwritten and lost.
- 6
What happens when a buffer becomes empty?
Model answer
The receiving device signals with an interrupt that it needs more data. The operating system then refills the buffer from the source.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Interrupts, Memory Management and Scheduling, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
