Process states, time-slicing, polling and threading
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Running, ready and blocked, what moves a process between them, and how time-slicing, polling and threads share one processor between many processes.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the three basic states of a process.
What does it mean for a process to be running?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three basic states of a process.
Model answer
The three states are running, ready and blocked. A process is in exactly one of these at any moment.
- 2
What does it mean for a process to be running?
Model answer
A running process is the one currently using the processor. Only one process per processor core can be running at a time.
- 3
What does it mean for a process to be ready?
Model answer
A ready process could use the processor immediately but is waiting its turn. The process sits in the ready queue.
- 4
What does it mean for a process to be blocked?
Model answer
A blocked process cannot continue until some event occurs, such as an input completing. The process is not considered for the processor while it is blocked.
- 5
Describe the change of state when a running process asks to read from disc.
Model answer
The running process becomes blocked while the transfer takes place. The scheduler hands the processor to a ready process.
- 6
Describe the change of state when the disc transfer a process waited for completes.
Model answer
The blocked process moves into the ready state. The process rejoins the ready queue and waits its turn.

Every question in Interrupts, Memory Management and Scheduling, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
