Utility software
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Utility software, why utility programs are needed alongside the operating system and difference between a full backup and an incremental backup.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why utility programs are needed alongside the operating system.
What does a disc defragmenter do?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is utility software?
Model answer
Utility software is a program that carries out a housekeeping task on the computer system. A utility maintains or improves the system rather than doing the user's own work.
- 2
Explain why utility programs are needed alongside the operating system.
Model answer
The operating system supplies only the essential services needed to run the machine. Utilities add maintenance tasks such as backup, compression and virus checking.
- 3
What does a disc defragmenter do?
Model answer
A defragmenter rearranges the blocks of each file so they lie next to one another. The read head then moves less and files load more quickly.
- 4
What does a backup utility do?
Model answer
A backup utility copies files to a second medium so they survive a failure. The utility can be scheduled to run automatically at a set time.
- 5
Explain the difference between a full backup and an incremental backup.
Model answer
A full backup copies every file on every run. An incremental backup copies only the files changed since the previous backup.
- 6
What does a file compression utility do?
Model answer
A compression utility re-encodes a file so that it occupies fewer bytes. The smaller file uses less storage and transmits faster.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Operating System and Its Modes, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
