Unicode and multilingual encoding

  • 3 things to know

Overview

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What problem does Unicode solve?

    Model answer

Unicode provides a single code for every character in every major writing system. Text can then be exchanged worldwide without choosing a local character set.

  2. 2

How does Unicode relate to ASCII?

    Model answer

The first 128 Unicode code points match the ASCII codes exactly. Plain ASCII text is therefore already valid Unicode.

  3. 3

Roughly how many characters can Unicode represent?

    Model answer

Unicode defines code points from 0 to just over 1.1 million. Around 160,000 of those code points are currently assigned to characters.

  4. 4

    What is a code point?

    Model answer

A code point is the number Unicode assigns to a particular character. Capital A is code point U+0041, written in hexadecimal.

  5. 5

    Describe UTF-8.

    Model answer

UTF-8 is a variable-length encoding using one to four bytes per character. Characters in the ASCII range still take a single byte.

  6. 6

    Describe UTF-16.

    Model answer

UTF-16 encodes most characters in two bytes and the remainder in four. Common English characters therefore cost more than they do in UTF-8.
