Methods of data transfer between processor and devices
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Programmed input and output, interrupt-driven data transfer and direct memory access.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is data transfer between processor and peripheral a problem?
What is programmed input and output?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is data transfer between processor and peripheral a problem?
Model answer
A processor works millions of times faster than a mechanical peripheral. A direct transfer would leave the processor waiting for most of the time.
- 2
What is programmed input and output?
Model answer
Programmed input and output means the processor itself moves every item of data to or from the device. The processor can do nothing else during the transfer.
- 3
Describe interrupt-driven data transfer.
Model answer
The processor starts the transfer and then continues with other work. The device raises an interrupt when it is ready for the next item.
- 4
Give one advantage of interrupt-driven transfer over programmed transfer.
Model answer
The processor is free to run other processes between items of data. Overall throughput of the system therefore rises.
- 5
What is direct memory access?
Model answer
Direct memory access lets a device controller move data straight into main memory. The processor is involved only at the start and at the end.
- 6
How does direct memory access reduce the load on the processor?
Model answer
The controller handles the whole block transfer on its own. The processor receives a single interrupt once the block is complete.

Every question in Interrupts, Memory Management and Scheduling, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
