Self-documenting identifiers
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Self-documenting identifier, two rules most languages impose on identifier names and camel case.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Rewrite the identifier x2 as a self-documenting identifier for a variable holding a pupil's surname.
Give a self-documenting identifier for a procedure that prints an end-of-year report.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a self-documenting identifier?
Model answer
A self-documenting identifier is a name that states what the item holds or does. The reader understands the code without needing a comment.
- 2
Rewrite the identifier x2 as a self-documenting identifier for a variable holding a pupil's surname.
Model answer
The identifier PupilSurname states exactly what the variable holds. A single letter such as x2 tells the reader nothing.
- 3
Give a self-documenting identifier for a procedure that prints an end-of-year report.
Model answer
The name PrintAnnualReport describes the action the procedure performs. A verb followed by the object is the usual pattern for a subprogram name.
- 4
Why do self-documenting identifiers reduce the cost of maintenance?
Model answer
A maintenance programmer reads meaningful names and understands the code faster. Less time is spent tracing what each store is for.
- 5
State two rules most languages impose on identifier names.
Model answer
An identifier may not contain spaces and may not be a reserved word of the language. Most languages also forbid a leading digit.
- 6
What is camel case, and why is it used in identifiers?
Model answer
Camel case joins words by capitalising each word after the first, as in dateOfBirth. The convention keeps a multi-word name readable without spaces.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Variables, Scope, Parameters and Identifiers, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
