Binary addition and subtraction
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Rules of single-column binary addition, carry out and how binary long multiplication works.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Add binary 00101100 and 00010011, giving an 8-bit answer.
Add binary 01001101 and 00110110 in an 8-bit register and state the denary result.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the rules of single-column binary addition.
Model answer
0 plus 0 is 0, and 0 plus 1 is 1. 1 plus 1 is 0 carry 1, and 1 plus 1 plus 1 is 1 carry 1.
- 2
Add binary 00101100 and 00010011, giving an 8-bit answer.
Model answer
The sum is 00111111 in binary. The inputs are 44 and 19 in denary, and 44 plus 19 gives 63.
- 3
Add binary 01001101 and 00110110 in an 8-bit register and state the denary result.
Model answer
The sum is 10000011, which is 131 unsigned. The inputs are 77 and 54, and 77 plus 54 gives 131.
- 4
Why does a carry out of the most significant column matter?
Model answer
A carry out of the top column has no place to go in a fixed-length register. The carry signals that the true answer needs more bits than the word length allows.
- 5
How is binary subtraction usually performed by a processor?
Model answer
Subtraction is carried out by adding the two's complement of the number being subtracted. The processor therefore needs only adding circuitry, not a separate subtractor.
- 6
Subtract binary 00011110 from 01011010 using two's complement.
Model answer
The two's complement of 00011110 is 11100010. Adding 01011010 to 11100010 gives 00111100 once the carry out is discarded, which is 60.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Number Systems and Binary Arithmetic, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
