Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is an entity?

    Model answer

An entity is a distinct thing about which data is stored, such as a student or a book. Each entity becomes a table in the finished database.

  2. 2

What is an attribute of an entity?

    Model answer

An attribute is a property of an entity that the system records. A student entity might have attributes for name, date of birth and tutor group.

  3. 3

What is a relationship in an entity relationship model?

    Model answer

A relationship is a meaningful association between two entities. The fact that a student enrols on a course is a relationship between STUDENT and COURSE.

  4. 4

Name the three degrees of relationship.

    Model answer

The three degrees are one to one, one to many and many to many. Each describes how many instances of one entity relate to instances of the other.

  5. 5

Give an example of a one to one relationship.

    Model answer

One employee has one company car and one car is assigned to one employee. Each row in either table matches at most one row in the other.

  6. 6

Give an example of a one to many relationship.

    Model answer

One class contains many pupils but each pupil belongs to one class. The many side carries a foreign key pointing at the one side.
