- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Function of a translation program, source code and object code and when an assembler would be used.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish between source code and object code.
What does an assembler do?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the function of a translation program.
Model answer
A translator converts a program written by a person into instructions the processor can execute. Source code becomes machine code or an intermediate form the machine can run.
- 2
Distinguish between source code and object code.
Model answer
Source code is the program as written by the programmer in a high-level or assembly language. Object code is the machine-level output produced by the translator.
- 3
What does an assembler do?
Model answer
An assembler translates assembly language into machine code. Each mnemonic instruction becomes exactly one machine instruction.
- 4
Give an example of when an assembler would be used.
Model answer
An assembler is used to build a device driver written to control hardware registers directly. Precise control over the instructions executed is the reason.
- 5
What does a compiler do?
Model answer
A compiler translates a whole high-level program into object code in one operation. The object code is saved and can be run many times without the compiler.
- 6
What does an interpreter do?
Model answer
An interpreter takes one statement of the source at a time, translates it and executes it immediately. The source must be present every time the program is run.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software Engineering Tools and Translators, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
