Overview
Static RAM and dynamic RAM, ROM used for in a computer and bootstrap loader.

Distinguish between static RAM and dynamic RAM.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is main memory used for?
Model answer
Main memory holds the programs and data the processor is currently working with. The processor can address main memory directly.
- 2
What does it mean to say that RAM is volatile?
Model answer
Volatile memory loses its contents as soon as power is removed. RAM is volatile, so unsaved work disappears when a machine is switched off.
- 3
Distinguish between static RAM and dynamic RAM.
Model answer
Static RAM stores each bit in a flip-flop and needs no refreshing. Dynamic RAM stores each bit as charge on a capacitor and must be refreshed thousands of times a second.
- 4
Where is static RAM normally used, and why not everywhere?
Model answer
Static RAM is used for cache because static RAM has a very short access time. The higher cost per bit and lower density rule static RAM out for main memory.
- 5
What is ROM used for in a computer?
Model answer
ROM holds firmware that must survive a power cut, such as the bootstrap loader. The processor can read ROM but cannot overwrite ROM in normal use.
- 6
What is the bootstrap loader?
Model answer
The bootstrap loader is a small program held in ROM that runs when the machine is switched on. The loader brings the operating system into RAM from secondary storage.

Every question in Computer Architecture, the Processor and Assembly Language, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
