Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a packet?

    Model answer

A packet is a small unit of data with addressing information attached, sent across a network. Large files are broken into many packets.

  2. 2

Name the three parts of a packet.

    Model answer

A packet has a header, a payload and a trailer. The header carries addressing, the payload carries the data and the trailer carries error checking.

  3. 3

What does the header of a TCP/IP packet contain?

    Model answer

The header holds the source and destination IP addresses, the sequence number and the protocol in use. Time to live and a header checksum are also carried there.

  4. 4

What is the payload of a packet?

    Model answer

The payload is the actual user data being carried by the packet. Payload size is limited so a packet stays small enough to route efficiently.

  5. 5

What does the trailer of a packet contain?

    Model answer

The trailer carries error checking data such as a cyclic redundancy check. An end-of-packet marker may also be included.

  6. 6

Why does a packet carry a sequence number?

    Model answer

Packets may take different routes and so arrive out of order. The sequence number lets the receiver reassemble the data in the correct order.
