- Component 2
Overview
Hash function, collision in hashing and why hashing is not encryption.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a hash function?
Why is a hash function described as one-way?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a hash function?
Model answer
A hash function turns a message of any length into a value of fixed length. The same input always produces the same hash.
- 2
Why is a hash function described as one-way?
Model answer
The hash can be calculated easily from the message. Recovering the message from the hash is computationally infeasible.
- 3
What is a collision in hashing?
Model answer
A collision occurs when two different inputs produce the same hash value. A good hash function makes finding one impractical.
- 4
How does a hash show that a file has been altered?
Model answer
The hash is recalculated and compared with the value stored earlier. A single changed bit produces a completely different hash.
- 5
Explain why hashing is not encryption.
Model answer
Hashing is deliberately irreversible and produces no key. Encryption is designed so the original data can be recovered.
- 6
How can a system check a password without ever storing it?
Model answer
The system stores only the hash of each password. The hash of whatever the user types is compared with the stored value.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Security, Cryptography and Attack, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
