Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is handshaking?

    Model answer

Handshaking is the exchange of signals that sets up a connection before data is sent. The two devices agree on the settings they will use.

  2. 2

    What is agreed during handshaking?

    Model answer

Transmission speed, error checking method and message format are typical items agreed. Readiness to send and to receive is also confirmed.

  3. 3

    Why is handshaking necessary?

    Model answer

Two devices may support different speeds and settings and must find common ground. Data sent before agreement would be misread or lost.

  4. 4

    Describe the TCP three-way handshake.

    Model answer

The client sends a SYN segment and the server replies with a SYN-ACK. The client answers with an ACK and the connection is then open.

  5. 5

What does the SYN flag indicate?

    Model answer

A SYN segment is a request to synchronise sequence numbers and open a connection. The initial sequence number is carried in that segment.

  6. 6

What is the purpose of the ACK in a handshake?

    Model answer

The ACK confirms that the previous segment arrived correctly. Each direction of the connection is open once the two sides have acknowledged.
