Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why must test data be chosen deliberately rather than picked at random?

    Model answer

Chosen data targets the conditions a program is most likely to get wrong. Random values usually exercise the same ordinary path over and over.

  2. 2

    What is normal test data?

    Model answer

Normal test data is typical valid data that the program should accept and process. Correct output on normal data shows the main path works.

  3. 3

    What is boundary test data?

    Model answer

Boundary test data lies exactly on the edges of an accepted range. Values just inside and just outside each edge are tested as a pair.

  4. 4

A field accepts marks from 0 to 100. Give suitable boundary test data.

    Model answer

The values −1, 0, 100 and 101 test both edges of the range. The two inside values must be accepted and the two outside values rejected.

  5. 5

    What is erroneous test data?

    Model answer

Erroneous test data is of the wrong type or form altogether and must be rejected. A word typed into a numeric field is a typical example.

  6. 6

Distinguish between erroneous and extreme test data.

    Model answer

Erroneous data should be refused because it is invalid in kind. Extreme data is valid but unusually large or small and must still be handled correctly.
