Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is meant by evaluating a computer-based solution?

    Model answer

Evaluation is a judgement of how well the finished system meets the need it was built for. The judgement is made against stated criteria.

  2. 2

Why must evaluation criteria be written before the system is built?

    Model answer

Criteria written afterwards can be shaped to whatever the system happens to do. Criteria fixed in advance make the judgement honest.

  3. 3

State the primary criterion for evaluating any solution.

    Model answer

The primary criterion is whether the system meets the requirements in its specification. Every requirement is tested in turn.

  4. 4

Name five criteria commonly used to evaluate a computer-based solution.

    Model answer

Fitness for purpose, reliability, performance, usability and maintainability are all used. Cost and security are usually added.

  5. 5

    How is reliability evaluated?

    Model answer

Reliability is judged by how often the system fails under normal use and how it behaves when it does. Mean time between failures is a common measure.

  6. 6

    How is performance evaluated?

    Model answer

Performance is measured as response time and throughput under a realistic load. Figures are compared with the targets in the specification.
