Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a character set?

    Model answer

A character set is an agreed mapping between symbols and the binary codes that represent them. The sender and the receiver must use the same set for text to be read correctly.

  2. 2

Why must character sets be standardised?

    Model answer

Two machines using different mappings would interpret the same byte as different symbols. A shared standard lets text move between systems unchanged.

  3. 3

How many bits does the original ASCII set use, and how many characters does that give?

    Model answer

Standard ASCII uses 7 bits per character. Seven bits give 2⁷ patterns, which is 128 characters.

  4. 4

    What is extended ASCII?

    Model answer

Extended ASCII uses the eighth bit of the byte to add 128 further codes. The extra codes hold accented letters, symbols and line-drawing characters.

  5. 5

State the ASCII codes for capital A and capital Z.

    Model answer

Capital A is 65 and capital Z is 90. The 26 capitals therefore occupy codes 65 to 90.

  6. 6

State the ASCII code for the digit character 0.

    Model answer

The digit character 0 has ASCII code 48. The digit characters run consecutively from 48 to 57.
