Overflow handling and file reorganisation
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Overflow area, open addressing as a way of handling collisions and chaining as a way of handling collisions.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe open addressing as a way of handling collisions.
Describe chaining as a way of handling collisions.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an overflow area?
Model answer
An overflow area is a reserved region for records that cannot go in their calculated position. A record is placed there when its home address is already occupied.
- 2
Describe open addressing as a way of handling collisions.
Model answer
Open addressing places the colliding record in the next free address after its home address. Searching continues from the home address until the record or a free slot is found.
- 3
Describe chaining as a way of handling collisions.
Model answer
Chaining is a method that keeps a linked list of all records hashing to the same address. A pointer at the home address leads to the next record in the chain.
- 4
Give one drawback of open addressing.
Model answer
A colliding record occupies the home address of another key, causing further collisions. Clusters of full addresses build up and searches get longer.
- 5
Give one drawback of chaining.
Model answer
Following a long chain needs several disc accesses, which is slow. Extra space is also used by the pointers themselves.
- 6
Why does file performance fall as the overflow area fills?
Model answer
More records sit away from their calculated addresses, so more accesses are needed to find them. Average access time therefore rises steadily.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Files, Records and File Organisation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
