Sorting Algorithms

Writing and altering sort algorithms

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 1

Overview

Changing a working sort rather than writing one from nothing: reversing the order, sorting records on one field, and adding the swap flag that stops a bubble sort early.

What you need to know

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How would you alter a bubble sort so that it sorts into descending order?

    Model answer

The comparison is reversed so a swap occurs when the left item is smaller than the right. Every other part of the algorithm stays the same.

  2. 2

How would you alter an insertion sort to sort into descending order?

    Model answer

The inner loop shifts items right while they are smaller than the item being placed. The rest of the algorithm is unchanged.

  3. 3

How would you alter a sort so that it orders records by surname rather than by a whole record?

    Model answer

The comparison tests the surname field of each record instead of the record itself. The exchange still moves the whole record.

  4. 4

What alteration turns a bubble sort into one that stops early?

    Model answer

A boolean flag is set to false at the start of each pass and set to true whenever a swap occurs. The outer loop repeats only while the flag is true.

  5. 5

Write pseudo-code for a swap of two adjacent array elements.

    Model answer

    The swap is Temp = List[i], then List[i] = List[i + 1], then List[i + 1] = Temp. The temporary variable prevents the first value being lost.

  6. 6

How would a sort algorithm be altered to count the comparisons it makes?

    Model answer

A counter is set to zero before the sort and increased by one immediately after each comparison. The counter is reported when the sort finishes.
