Files, records and fields
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Key field, composite key and how a program creates a new file.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a field.
How are a file, a record and a field related?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a record.
Model answer
A record is a collection of related fields describing one entity, such as one pupil. A file is made up of many records of the same structure.
- 2
Define a field.
Model answer
A field is a single item of data within a record, such as a surname or a date of birth. Each field has its own name and data type.
- 3
How are a file, a record and a field related?
Model answer
A file contains records and each record contains fields. The hierarchy runs from file down to record down to field.
- 4
What is a key field?
Model answer
A key field is the field whose value uniquely identifies a record in the file. A pupil number or an account number is a typical key field.
- 5
Why must a key field be unique?
Model answer
Two records sharing a key value could not be told apart when one is searched for. Updates and deletions would then act on the wrong record.
- 6
What is a composite key?
Model answer
A composite key is a key made from two or more fields together. The combination is unique even though neither field is unique on its own.
