Lifetime of variables
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Lifetime of a variable and lifetime of a global variable.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must a subprogram never return the address of one of its local variables?
What is meant by the lifetime of a variable?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by the lifetime of a variable?
Model answer
The lifetime of a variable is the period during execution for which memory is allocated to it. Outside that period the store does not exist.
- 2
When is memory allocated to a local variable?
Model answer
Memory is allocated when the subprogram is called. The store is released as soon as the subprogram returns.
- 3
What is the lifetime of a global variable?
Model answer
A global variable exists for the whole run of the program. Memory is allocated at the start and released only when the program ends.
- 4
Explain why a local variable loses its value between two calls to the same subprogram.
Model answer
The store is destroyed when the first call returns, so nothing is kept. The second call creates a fresh variable with no memory of the first.
- 5
How can a subprogram remember a value between calls without using a global variable?
Model answer
The value can be returned to the caller and passed back in on the next call. Some languages also provide a static local variable that keeps its store.
- 6
Distinguish between the scope and the lifetime of a variable.
Model answer
Scope is about where in the code the name can be used. Lifetime is about when during execution the store exists.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Variables, Scope, Parameters and Identifiers, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
