Hexadecimal notation
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Base of the hexadecimal number system and denary values of the hexadecimal digits A to F.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the denary values of the hexadecimal digits A to F.
Why is hexadecimal a convenient shorthand for binary?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the base of the hexadecimal number system?
Model answer
Hexadecimal is a base 16 system. The sixteen digits run 0 to 9 and then A to F.
- 2
State the denary values of the hexadecimal digits A to F.
Model answer
A is 10, B is 11 and C is 12. D is 13, E is 14 and F is 15.
- 3
Why is hexadecimal a convenient shorthand for binary?
Model answer
One hexadecimal digit represents exactly four binary bits, because 16 is 2⁴. A byte therefore needs only two hexadecimal digits instead of eight binary ones.
- 4
Convert binary 11010110 to hexadecimal.
Model answer
Binary 11010110 splits into the nibbles 1101 and 0110. The nibble 1101 is D and 0110 is 6, giving hexadecimal D6.
- 5
Convert hexadecimal 3F to binary and to denary.
Model answer
Hexadecimal 3F is 00111111 in binary. The denary value is 63.
- 6
Convert hexadecimal A9 to 8-bit binary.
Model answer
Hexadecimal A9 is 10101001 in binary. The digit A gives 1010 and the digit 9 gives 1001.
