What Data Transmission and Network Performance covers

Data Transmission and Network Performance is examined in Component 2, Computer Architecture, Data, Communication and Applications. It covers serial and parallel transmission, simplex, half duplex and full duplex, multiplexing and sharing a channel, circuit, message and packet switching, packets, headers and packet contents, network collisions and collision detection, routing traffic on a network and calculating transfer rates and lowest cost routes.

Commonly confused

Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.

  • Half duplex vs Full duplex

Half duplex: alternating direction on one channel. Full duplex: sending both ways at once on two.

  • Circuit switching vs Packet switching

Circuit switching: reserving a path for the whole call. Packet switching: routing each small block independently.

  • Message switching vs Packet switching

Message switching: storing a whole transmission at each node before passing it on. Packet switching: forwarding small blocks immediately.

Questions from this topic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is serial transmission?

    Model answer

Serial transmission sends the bits of a message one after another along a single wire. Each bit arrives in turn at the receiver.

  2. 2

    What is parallel transmission?

    Model answer

Parallel transmission sends several bits at the same instant along separate parallel wires. An eight-wire link carries a whole byte at once.

  3. 3

Give two advantages of serial transmission.

    Model answer

Serial transmission needs only one data wire, so cabling is cheap and thin. Reliable transmission over long distances is also possible.

  4. 4

Give two advantages of parallel transmission.

    Model answer

Parallel transmission moves several bits per clock tick, giving high throughput over short distances. Circuitry at each end is also simple.

  5. 5

What is skew, and why does it limit parallel transmission?

    Model answer

Skew is the difference in arrival time between bits travelling on parallel wires. The receiver can no longer tell which bits belong together once skew grows large.

  6. 6

    What is crosstalk?

    Model answer

Crosstalk is interference induced in one wire by the signal in a neighbouring wire. Closely packed parallel wires suffer crosstalk badly.
