Programming Paradigms and Computer Languages
Programming paradigms and where each is used
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Programming paradigm, imperative and a declarative style and multi-paradigm language.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name four programming paradigms.
Distinguish between an imperative and a declarative style.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a programming paradigm?
Model answer
A paradigm is a style of programming with its own way of organising code and data. Each paradigm brings its own vocabulary, structures and habits of design.
- 2
Name four programming paradigms.
Model answer
Procedural, object-oriented, event-driven and declarative programming are four recognised paradigms. Mark-up languages describe data rather than behaviour and are usually treated alongside them.
- 3
Distinguish between an imperative and a declarative style.
Model answer
An imperative program states the steps the machine must carry out in order. A declarative program states the result wanted and leaves the method to the system.
- 4
Which paradigm suits a payroll program that reads a file and calculates deductions?
Model answer
A procedural language suits a batch calculation that follows a fixed sequence of steps. The problem breaks naturally into subroutines with no user interaction to handle.
- 5
Which paradigm suits a drawing application with menus, toolbars and a canvas?
Model answer
An event-driven approach suits software that must respond to unpredictable user actions. Each button and menu item is given its own handler.
- 6
Which paradigm suits a simulation of vehicles moving around a city?
Model answer
An object-oriented approach suits a simulation made of many similar independent things. Each vehicle becomes an object with its own state and behaviour.
