Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Which legislation governs the use of personal data in the United Kingdom?

    Model answer

The Data Protection Act 2018 governs it, working alongside the retained UK General Data Protection Regulation. The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 amends that framework.

  2. 2

    Define personal data.

    Model answer

Personal data is any information relating to an identified or identifiable living person. A name, an address, an online identifier and a location can all qualify.

  3. 3

    What is special category data?

    Model answer

Special category data is personal data needing extra protection, such as health, ethnicity, religion, political opinion, sexual orientation and biometric data. Processing it requires a stronger legal basis.

  4. 4

State four of the data protection principles.

    Model answer

Data must be processed lawfully, fairly and transparently, and collected only for specified purposes. The data held must also be adequate but not excessive, accurate, and kept no longer than necessary.

  5. 5

    What is a data subject?

    Model answer

A data subject is the living individual whom the personal data is about.

  6. 6

Distinguish a data controller from a data processor.

    Model answer

A data controller decides the purpose and the means of the processing and carries the legal responsibility. A data processor acts only on the controller's instructions.
