What is meant by an unambiguous syntax?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Give an example of an ambiguous English sentence and state the two readings.

    Model answer

The sentence 'I saw the man with the telescope' has two readings. The telescope may belong to the man, or may be the instrument used to see him.

  2. 2

Why is ambiguity acceptable in English but fatal in a programming language?

    Model answer

A human listener resolves ambiguity from context and can ask what was meant. A compiler has no context and must produce one definite translation.

  3. 3

What is meant by an unambiguous syntax?

    Model answer

An unambiguous syntax allows each valid program exactly one interpretation. Only one parse tree can be built from a given piece of source code.

  4. 4

Explain how operator precedence removes an ambiguity.

    Model answer

The expression 2 + 3 × 4 could be read two ways without a rule. Precedence fixes multiplication before addition, so the value is always 14.

  5. 5

Why must a language definition state the meaning as well as the grammar?

    Model answer

A grammar says which programs are legal but not what they do when run. Two compilers could otherwise translate the same legal program differently.

  6. 6

What is meant by the standardisation of a computer language?

    Model answer

Standardisation agrees one published definition of a language that every implementer follows. Compilers from different vendors then accept the same programs.
