Expert systems
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Expert system and purpose of the explanation facility.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the three main components of an expert system.
What does the knowledge base of an expert system hold?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define an expert system.
Model answer
An expert system is software that reproduces the decision-making of a human specialist in a narrow field. Advice is given with the reasoning behind it.
- 2
Name the three main components of an expert system.
Model answer
The three components are the knowledge base, the inference engine and the user interface. An explanation facility is normally added.
- 3
What does the knowledge base hold?
Model answer
The knowledge base holds the facts and rules of the subject. Rules are usually written in the form if a condition then a conclusion.
- 4
What does the inference engine do?
Model answer
The inference engine applies the rules in the knowledge base to the facts supplied by the user. New conclusions are derived until an answer is reached.
- 5
What is the purpose of the explanation facility?
Model answer
The explanation facility shows the chain of rules that produced the conclusion. A specialist can then judge whether the reasoning is sound.
- 6
Distinguish forward chaining from backward chaining.
Model answer
Forward chaining starts from the known facts and derives whatever follows. Backward chaining starts from a candidate conclusion and looks only for the evidence that would establish it.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Types of Software System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
