Fixed and variable length fields and records
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Fixed length field and variable length field.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a variable length field?
Give two advantages of fixed length records.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a fixed length field?
Model answer
A fixed length field always occupies the same number of bytes, whatever value it holds. Short values are padded with spaces or zeros to fill the space.
- 2
What is a variable length field?
Model answer
A variable length field occupies only as many bytes as the value needs. A separator character or a length count marks where the field ends.
- 3
Give two advantages of fixed length records.
Model answer
The position of any record can be calculated directly from its number, allowing direct access. Programs are also simpler, because every record has the same layout.
- 4
Give two disadvantages of fixed length records.
Model answer
Storage is wasted whenever a value is shorter than the space reserved. Any value longer than the field is truncated and data is lost.
- 5
Give two advantages of variable length records.
Model answer
Variable length records waste no space on padding, so the file is smaller. Long values are never truncated, however unusual their length.
- 6
Give two disadvantages of variable length records.
Model answer
The start of a record cannot be calculated, so direct access is difficult. Extra processing is needed to find each separator or read each length count.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Files, Records and File Organisation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
