Backup and recovery procedures
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Full backup, incremental backup and differential backup.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe a full backup.
Describe an incremental backup.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a backup?
Model answer
A backup is a copy of data kept separately so it can be restored after a loss. The copy is only useful if it is recent and readable.
- 2
Describe a full backup.
Model answer
A full backup copies every file in the set regardless of whether it has changed. Restoring is simple because only one copy is needed.
- 3
Describe an incremental backup.
Model answer
An incremental backup copies only the files changed since the previous backup of any kind. Each daily copy is small and quick to take.
- 4
Describe a differential backup.
Model answer
A differential backup copies every file changed since the last full backup. Each copy grows through the week but a restore needs only two sets.
- 5
Compare incremental and differential backups for speed of restoring.
Model answer
A differential restore needs the last full backup and one differential copy. An incremental restore needs the full backup and every incremental copy since it.
- 6
Describe the grandfather-father-son scheme.
Model answer
The grandfather-father-son scheme keeps three generations of backup at once. Daily copies are the sons, weekly copies the fathers and monthly copies the grandfathers.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Systems Analysis, Maintenance and Documentation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
