Acceptance testing and methods of changeover
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Alpha testing, beta testing and acceptance testing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe beta testing.
State one benefit of beta testing that alpha testing cannot provide.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe alpha testing.
Model answer
Alpha testing is carried out inside the developing organisation using test data. Faults are found and corrected before anyone outside the company sees the software.
- 2
Describe beta testing.
Model answer
Beta testing releases the software to selected outside users who run it in real conditions. Users report faults and problems the developers never thought to test.
- 3
State one benefit of beta testing that alpha testing cannot provide.
Model answer
Beta users run the software on hardware and data the developers do not have. Combinations of settings and machines are tested far more widely.
- 4
Describe acceptance testing.
Model answer
Acceptance testing is run by the client against the agreed requirements specification. Successful testing is the point at which the client formally accepts the system.
- 5
Why is acceptance testing carried out with the client's own data?
Model answer
Real data contains the volumes, oddities and error cases that invented test data misses. The client is also convinced by seeing familiar records processed correctly.
- 6
Describe direct changeover.
Model answer
Direct changeover stops the old system and starts the new one immediately. The whole organisation moves across at a single moment.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Systems Analysis, Maintenance and Documentation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
