Cryptography: its purpose, and symmetric and asymmetric keys
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Need for cryptography when data travels over a public network, terms plaintext and ciphertext and encryption key.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain the need for cryptography when data travels over a public network.
Define the terms plaintext and ciphertext.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is cryptography?
Model answer
Cryptography is the transformation of data so that only an intended reader can understand it. The original data is recovered using a key.
- 2
Explain the need for cryptography when data travels over a public network.
Model answer
A message crossing a public network can be copied at many points along the route. Encryption makes any copy useless to whoever takes it.
- 3
Define the terms plaintext and ciphertext.
Model answer
Plaintext is the original readable message. Ciphertext is the scrambled form produced by the encryption process.
- 4
What is an encryption key?
Model answer
An encryption key is the value that controls how the algorithm scrambles the data. The same algorithm with a different key produces completely different ciphertext.
- 5
Why is the algorithm normally made public while the key is kept secret?
Model answer
A public algorithm can be examined by experts and its weaknesses found and fixed. Security then rests on the key alone, which can be changed easily.
- 6
What is symmetric encryption?
Model answer
Symmetric encryption uses the same key to encrypt and to decrypt. Both parties must already hold that one shared secret key.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Security, Cryptography and Attack, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
