Dry running, trace tables and identifying errors
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Dry running an algorithm, trace table and logical error.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a trace table?
Why is a dry run particularly good at exposing logical errors?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by dry running an algorithm?
Model answer
A dry run is a manual walk through the code with chosen test data and no computer. The programmer records each variable as every line executes.
- 2
What is a trace table?
Model answer
A trace table is a grid with one column per variable and one row per pass. Values are written in as the algorithm is stepped through by hand.
- 3
Why is a dry run particularly good at exposing logical errors?
Model answer
A logical error produces a wrong answer without any error message appearing. Writing down every intermediate value shows the exact step where the values go wrong.
- 4
Define a logical error.
Model answer
A logical error is a fault in the design of an algorithm that gives incorrect output. The program still runs to completion without complaint.
- 5
Define a syntax error.
Model answer
A syntax error breaks the grammatical rules of the programming language. The translator refuses to produce object code until the fault is corrected.
- 6
Define a runtime error.
Model answer
A runtime error stops a program while it is executing, such as dividing by zero. The code was grammatically correct but the operation attempted is impossible.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Validation, Verification and Testing, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
