  1. 1

Name the six stages a compiler works through, in order.

    Model answer

Lexical analysis, symbol table construction, syntax analysis, semantic analysis, code generation and optimisation are the stages. Each stage passes its output to the next.

  2. 2

    What happens during lexical analysis?

    Model answer

Lexical analysis reads the source character by character and groups the characters into tokens. Comments, spaces and layout are discarded at this stage.

  3. 3

    What is a token?

    Model answer

A token is a single meaningful item of the language such as a keyword, identifier, operator or constant. Each token is passed on as a code rather than as the original text.

  4. 4

Why are comments and whitespace removed during lexical analysis?

    Model answer

Comments and layout carry no meaning for the machine and only lengthen later stages. The removal of both makes the stream of tokens shorter and simpler to parse.

  5. 5

    What is the symbol table?

    Model answer

The symbol table is a store holding every identifier used in the program. Type, scope, size and eventual memory address are recorded against each name.

  6. 6

When is the symbol table built, and why is it needed later?

    Model answer

Construction begins during lexical analysis and entries are completed by the later stages. Semantic analysis and code generation both look up identifiers in the table.
