Storing characters and numbers in binary
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
ASCII code for the space character and control character.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the ASCII code for lower case a in denary and in hexadecimal.
Why is the character 7 not the same as the number 7 inside a computer?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does a computer store a character such as the letter A?
Model answer
Each character is given a code number by an agreed character set. The letter A is code 65 in ASCII, stored as the byte 01000001.
- 2
State the ASCII code for lower case a in denary and in hexadecimal.
Model answer
Lower case a is 97 in denary and 61 in hexadecimal. The code is 32 more than the code for capital A.
- 3
Why is the character 7 not the same as the number 7 inside a computer?
Model answer
The character 7 is stored as its character code, which is 55 in ASCII. The number 7 is stored as the binary value 00000111.
- 4
How can a digit character be converted to the number it represents?
Model answer
The ASCII code of the character 0 is 48, so 48 is subtracted from the code. The character 9 has code 57, and 57 minus 48 gives 9.
- 5
State the ASCII code for the space character.
Model answer
The space character has ASCII code 32. In hexadecimal that code is 20.
- 6
Explain why the same byte can mean different things in different contexts.
Model answer
A byte is only a pattern of eight bits with no meaning of its own. The program decides whether to read the pattern as a number, a character or an instruction.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Number Systems and Binary Arithmetic, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
