Program version management
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Program version management, checking a file out of a repository and rolling back to an earlier version.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a development team need version management?
What is a version number used for?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is program version management?
Model answer
Version management keeps a record of every version of the source code as it develops. Each change is stored so any earlier state can be recovered.
- 2
Why does a development team need version management?
Model answer
Several programmers change the same files, and their work must be combined without loss. A central record shows exactly which version is current.
- 3
What is a version number used for?
Model answer
A version number identifies one particular release of the software unambiguously. Bug reports and documentation can then be matched to the release they refer to.
- 4
What does checking a file out of a repository mean?
Model answer
A check-out takes a working copy of the current version for a developer to edit. The repository records who holds the file and from which version.
- 5
What does checking a file back in mean?
Model answer
A check-in returns the edited file and stores it as a new version in the repository. A comment describing the change is recorded alongside it.
- 6
How does version management prevent two programmers overwriting each other's work?
Model answer
The repository either locks a file while it is checked out or merges the two sets of changes. Conflicting edits to the same lines are reported rather than silently lost.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Software Engineering Tools and Translators, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
