What Data Types, Characters and Floating Point covers

Data Types, Characters and Floating Point is examined in Component 2, Computer Architecture, Data, Communication and Applications. It covers primitive data types, storage requirements for each data type, ASCII and standardised character sets, Unicode and multilingual encoding, floating point form: mantissa and exponent, converting between real numbers and floating point, integer and floating point compared and truncation, rounding and accuracy.

Commonly confused

Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.

  • Precision vs Range

Precision: how many significant bits the mantissa keeps. Range: the span of magnitudes the exponent can reach.

  • ASCII vs Unicode

ASCII: using 7 bits for 128 symbols and not being able to cover most of the world's languages. Unicode: defining over a million code points and keeping the first 128 identical.

  • Character vs String of length one

Character: a fixed-size primitive holding one symbol. String of length one: a structure with a size marker or terminator around one symbol.

Questions from this topic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the five primitive data types this course requires.

    Model answer

The five primitive types are Boolean, character, string, integer and real. Every more complex structure is built from these basic types.

  2. 2

What values can a Boolean variable take?

    Model answer

A Boolean variable holds only TRUE or FALSE. The two values are usually stored as 1 and 0.

  3. 3

    Define the character data type.

    Model answer

A character holds exactly one symbol from the character set, such as a letter, digit or punctuation mark. The symbol is stored as its numeric character code.

  4. 4

    Define the string data type.

    Model answer

A string is a sequence of characters of any length, including the empty string. Strings are stored as consecutive character codes with a length count or a terminator.

  5. 5

    Define the integer data type.

    Model answer

An integer is a whole number with no fractional part, positive, negative or zero. Integers are stored exactly, usually in two's complement.

  6. 6

    Define the real data type.

    Model answer

A real number can have a fractional part, such as 3.75 or −0.5. Reals are normally stored in floating point form.
