The processor: control unit, ALU and registers
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Role of the control unit, status register and general purpose register and a special purpose register.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the role of the control unit?
What operations does the arithmetic logic unit carry out?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the role of the control unit?
Model answer
The control unit decodes each instruction and sends timing and control signals to the rest of the processor. The control unit also directs the flow of data along the buses.
- 2
What operations does the arithmetic logic unit carry out?
Model answer
The arithmetic logic unit performs arithmetic such as addition and subtraction. The unit also performs logical operations such as AND, OR and NOT, and bit shifts.
- 3
What is a register, and why is it faster than main memory?
Model answer
A register is a very small store holding one word inside the processor itself. A register needs no bus transfer, so the processor can read it in a single clock cycle.
- 4
What does the program counter hold?
Model answer
The program counter holds the address of the next instruction to be fetched. The program counter is incremented during each fetch.
- 5
What does the memory address register hold?
Model answer
The memory address register holds the address of the memory location currently being accessed. The memory address register drives that address onto the address bus.
- 6
What does the memory data register hold?
Model answer
The memory data register holds the data or instruction just read from memory, or the value about to be written to memory. The memory data register is the processor's gateway to the data bus.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Computer Architecture, the Processor and Assembly Language, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
