Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is an output device?

    Model answer

An output device converts processed data into a form a person or a machine can use. A monitor and an actuator are both output devices.

  2. 2

How does an LCD monitor produce an image?

    Model answer

An LCD panel uses liquid crystals to block or pass light from a backlight. Each pixel has red, green and blue sub-pixels whose brightness sets the colour.

  3. 3

How does an OLED display differ from an LCD?

    Model answer

An OLED panel has pixels that emit their own light and needs no backlight. True blacks, thinner panels and wider viewing angles follow from that.

  4. 4

What do resolution and refresh rate measure on a display?

    Model answer

Resolution is the number of pixels across and down the screen. Refresh rate is the number of times per second the image is redrawn, measured in hertz.

  5. 5

Describe how a laser printer produces a page.

    Model answer

A laser draws the page as a pattern of charge on a rotating drum. Toner sticks to the charged areas and is fused onto the paper by heat and pressure.

  6. 6

Describe how an inkjet printer produces a page.

    Model answer

An inkjet printer sprays tiny droplets of liquid ink from a moving print head. The droplets are forced out by heat or by a piezoelectric crystal.
