Managing peripherals, processes and memory protection
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Process control block, how the operating system manages a peripheral device and memory protection.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a process?
State three items of information the operating system records about each process.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a process?
Model answer
A process is a program in the course of being executed. A process has its own area of memory and its own set of register values.
- 2
State three items of information the operating system records about each process.
Model answer
The operating system records the process identifier and the current state of the process. The operating system also records the register contents saved when the process last stopped.
- 3
What is a process control block?
Model answer
A process control block is the data structure holding all the information about one process. The block stores the identifier, the state, the priority and the saved registers.
- 4
Explain how the operating system manages a peripheral device.
Model answer
The operating system holds a queue of requests for each device and issues them in turn. A device driver converts each request into the signals the device needs.
- 5
Why can an application program not simply drive a peripheral directly?
Model answer
Direct access would let two programs use one device at once and corrupt the output. Direct access would also let a faulty program crash the whole machine.
- 6
What is meant by memory protection?
Model answer
Memory protection stops one process reading or writing memory that belongs to another. The hardware checks every address a process uses against the limits it was given.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Operating System and Its Modes, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
