Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is an array of records?

    Model answer

An array of records holds many records of the same type under one identifier. Each record is reached by its index.

  2. 2

How is one field of one record inside an array referenced?

    Model answer

A field is written as student[7].surname. The index selects the record and the dot selects the field within it.

  3. 3

Describe how a new record is added to an unordered array of records.

    Model answer

The new record is written into the first free position in the array. The counter of records in use is then increased by one.

  4. 4

Describe how a record is deleted from an array of records.

    Model answer

The records after it are shifted one place forward, or the slot is simply marked as deleted. The count of records in use falls by one.

  5. 5

Describe how an array of records is searched for a given key.

    Model answer

Each record is examined in turn and its key field compared with the target value. The index of the matching record is then returned.

  6. 6

How is an array of records sorted?

    Model answer

Records are compared on one chosen field and whole records are exchanged. A sort on the key field puts the whole file into key order.
