Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is a user view of a database?

    Model answer

A user view is a subset of the database presented to a particular user or group. The view can hide tables, rows and columns the user does not need.

  2. 2

Give two advantages of different users having different views.

    Model answer

Security improves, because sensitive fields are hidden from users who do not need them. Screens are also simpler, since each user sees only relevant data.

  3. 3

How does a view improve security in a hospital database?

    Model answer

A receptionist can see appointment times without seeing clinical notes. A doctor's view includes the medical history that the receptionist is denied.

  4. 4

How does a view help a user work more efficiently?

    Model answer

A view removes irrelevant columns, so the required data is found faster. Fewer fields on screen also reduce the chance of an entry error.

  5. 5

Can a view be updated as well as read?

    Model answer

A simple view based on one table can usually accept updates, which pass through to the table. A view built from several joined tables is often read-only.

  6. 6

How does a view support data independence?

    Model answer

The underlying tables can be restructured while the view keeps presenting the same columns. Programs written against the view continue to work unchanged.
