Biometric technologies and their limitations
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Biometric authentication, four biometric characteristics in common use and stages of enrolling a user in a biometric system.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name four biometric characteristics in common use.
Give two behavioural biometrics.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is biometric authentication?
Model answer
Biometric authentication identifies a person by a physical or behavioural characteristic. The measured feature replaces or supports a password.
- 2
Name four biometric characteristics in common use.
Model answer
Fingerprints and facial features are widely used. Iris patterns and voice patterns are also measured.
- 3
Give two behavioural biometrics.
Model answer
The rhythm of a person's typing is a behavioural biometric. The way a person walks is another.
- 4
Explain the stages of enrolling a user in a biometric system.
Model answer
A sample of the characteristic is captured and the distinguishing features are extracted from it. A template is then stored for future comparisons.
- 5
Why is a template stored rather than the original image?
Model answer
A template is far smaller and much faster to compare. The original image cannot be rebuilt from a well-designed template.
- 6
Give two advantages of biometric authentication over a password.
Model answer
A physical characteristic cannot be forgotten or lent to somebody else. The user has nothing to carry and nothing to memorise.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Security, Cryptography and Attack, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
