Event-driven and visual programming
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Distinguishing feature of event-driven programming, event in this context and event handler.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the distinguishing feature of event-driven programming.
What is an event in event-driven programming?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the distinguishing feature of event-driven programming.
Model answer
The order of execution in an event-driven program is decided by events rather than by the listing. Code sits idle until something happens that it has been told to respond to.
- 2
What is an event in this context?
Model answer
An event is an occurrence the program can detect, such as a click, a keypress or a timer expiring. Each event may have a piece of code attached to it.
- 3
What is an event handler?
Model answer
An event handler is the subroutine that runs when a particular event occurs. The handler is registered against the control and the event type.
- 4
Explain the role of the main event loop.
Model answer
The event loop waits for events, takes them from the queue and calls the matching handler. The loop repeats for as long as the program is running.
- 5
Why are events placed in a queue?
Model answer
Events can arrive faster than they are processed, and a queue preserves their order. Actions are not lost while an earlier handler is still running.
- 6
Give three examples of events a desktop application would respond to.
Model answer
A mouse click, a key being pressed and a window being resized are all events. Each of the three can have its own handler.
