Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is HTTP used for?

    Model answer

HTTP transfers web pages and their resources between a web server and a browser. Requests and responses follow a fixed message format.

  2. 2

How does HTTPS differ from HTTP?

    Model answer

HTTPS carries the same requests inside an encrypted TLS connection. Intercepted traffic is unreadable and the server's identity is checked by a certificate.

  3. 3

    What is FTP used for?

    Model answer

FTP transfers whole files between a client and a file server. A website is uploaded to its host this way.

  4. 4

Give one thing FTP offers that HTTP does not.

    Model answer

FTP allows a directory listing and the renaming or deletion of files on the server. HTTP is designed for fetching resources rather than managing them.

  5. 5

    What is SMTP used for?

    Model answer

SMTP sends outgoing email from a client to a mail server and on between mail servers. SMTP is a push protocol.

  6. 6

    What is IMAP used for?

    Model answer

IMAP retrieves email while leaving the messages stored on the mail server. Several devices can therefore see the same synchronised mailbox.
