Primary keys, foreign keys and indexes
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Primary key, foreign key and secondary key.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a primary key?
What is a foreign key?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a primary key?
Model answer
A primary key is the attribute or set of attributes that uniquely identifies each row of a table. The value can never be empty or duplicated.
- 2
What is a foreign key?
Model answer
A foreign key is an attribute in one table that matches the primary key of another table. The match is what links the two tables together.
- 3
What is a composite primary key?
Model answer
A composite primary key is made from two or more attributes together. A link table joining students to courses is usually keyed on both identifiers.
- 4
What is a secondary key?
Model answer
A secondary key is a non-unique attribute used to search or sort the table. A surname field is a typical secondary key.
- 5
What is referential integrity?
Model answer
Referential integrity means every foreign key value must match an existing primary key value. A row cannot refer to a record that does not exist.
- 6
What happens if referential integrity is not enforced?
Model answer
Orphaned rows appear, pointing at records that have been deleted. Reports then show gaps, or fail when the missing record is looked up.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Databases, Normalisation and Entity Modelling, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
