Parallel processing and the limits to parallelisation
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Parallel processing, three limiting factors to parallelisation and data dependency.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish between pipelining and parallel processing.
What does SIMD stand for, and what does it describe?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is parallel processing?
Model answer
Parallel processing divides a task into parts that run at the same time on different processors. The parts are combined into one result at the end.
- 2
Distinguish between pipelining and parallel processing.
Model answer
A pipeline overlaps different stages of consecutive instructions inside one processor. Parallel processing runs whole sub-tasks simultaneously on separate processors.
- 3
What does SIMD stand for, and what does it describe?
Model answer
SIMD stands for single instruction, multiple data. One instruction is applied to many data items at once, as in graphics and vector work.
- 4
What does MIMD stand for, and what does it describe?
Model answer
MIMD stands for multiple instruction, multiple data. Each processor runs its own instruction stream on its own data, as a multi-core processor does.
- 5
Give two applications well suited to parallel processing.
Model answer
Weather forecasting and image rendering are both well suited to parallel processing. Each divides into many largely independent calculations.
- 6
Why can a strictly sequential task not be speeded up by adding processors?
Model answer
A sequential task needs the result of each step before the next step can begin. The extra processors have nothing to do and simply wait.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Computer Architecture, the Processor and Assembly Language, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
