Routing traffic on a network
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Routing table, static and dynamic routing and routing metric.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a routing table?
What is a hop?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is routing?
Model answer
Routing is the process of choosing the path a packet takes from source to destination. Routers make that decision at each step of the journey.
- 2
What is a routing table?
Model answer
A routing table lists known destination networks and the next hop towards each one. The router looks up each packet's destination address in the table.
- 3
What is a hop?
Model answer
A hop is one step from one router to the next along a path. A route of four hops passes through four routers.
- 4
Distinguish between static and dynamic routing.
Model answer
Static routing uses routes entered by an administrator and never changed automatically. Dynamic routing lets routers exchange information and update their tables as the network changes.
- 5
Give one advantage of dynamic routing.
Model answer
Dynamic routing reroutes traffic automatically when a link fails or becomes congested. Administrators avoid reconfiguring every router by hand.
- 6
What is a routing metric?
Model answer
A routing metric is the cost value used to compare alternative paths. Hop count, bandwidth, delay and monetary cost are all common metrics.

Every question in Data Transmission and Network Performance, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
