Calculating transfer rates and lowest cost routes
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Data transfer rate and relationship linking file size, transfer rate and time.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How many bits are in a byte, and why does this matter in a transfer calculation?
State the relationship linking file size, transfer rate and time.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by data transfer rate?
Model answer
Data transfer rate is the amount of data carried by a link in a given time. Rates are normally quoted in bits per second.
- 2
How many bits are in a byte, and why does this matter in a transfer calculation?
Model answer
One byte is 8 bits. A file size in bytes must be multiplied by 8 before dividing by a rate in bits per second.
- 3
State the relationship linking file size, transfer rate and time.
Model answer
Time equals file size divided by transfer rate. File size and rate must be expressed in the same units before dividing.
- 4
A 40 Mbit file is sent over a 10 Mbit/s link. Calculate the transmission time.
Model answer
The time is 40 ÷ 10 = 4 seconds. A check the other way gives 10 Mbit/s × 4 s = 40 Mbit.
- 5
A 24 MB file is sent over a 16 Mbit/s connection. Calculate the time taken.
Model answer
The file is 24 × 8 = 192 Mbit. The time is 192 ÷ 16 = 12 seconds.
- 6
A 3 GB film downloads in 400 seconds. Calculate the average transfer rate in Mbit/s.
Model answer
The film is 3,000 MB, which is 24,000 Mbit. The rate is 24,000 ÷ 400 = 60 Mbit/s.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Transmission and Network Performance, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
